What is Improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs?
Improved Windows Search is an AI-powered search experience available exclusively on Copilot+ PCs. Instead of relying only on exact keywords or file names, it uses conversational language and context to help you find what you need.
You can type or say what you’re looking for in a natural way—such as “eco-friendly, sustainable clothing presentations from last quarter”—and Windows Search will look across your PC and connected Microsoft 365 content to surface relevant files, even when the file names don’t match your wording.
In short, it reimagines search from a simple keyword lookup into a more intuitive, context-aware assistant for finding documents, images, and settings.
How does context-aware search actually work?
Improved Windows Search uses AI to understand the intent and context behind your query, not just the literal words you type.
For example, an employee at a fashion brand like “Contoso Fashion” might search for “eco-friendly, sustainable clothing lookbook” without remembering the exact file name. Improved Windows Search interprets the concepts—eco-friendly, sustainable, clothing—and surfaces files, presentations, or images that match those ideas, even if the file is named something generic like “Q2_campaign_final_v3.pptx.”
This context-aware approach helps employees:

- Taskbar: Start typing in the main search box on your taskbar to use the AI-enhanced experience.
- File Explorer: Use search directly within File Explorer to find documents and images using natural language.
It’s designed to work across both your local device and the cloud, bringing Windows and Microsoft 365 closer together. That means it can search:
- Files stored on your PC
- Content available through your Microsoft 365 environment (where your organization has enabled it)
By combining client and cloud search, employees can get a more complete view of their work content from a single, familiar search entry point—without constantly switching between apps or tools.
