What is the NCSC Innovation Lab?
The NCSC Innovation Lab in Arlington, Virginia is a dedicated space where courts and technology partners work together to reimagine how judicial services are delivered.
It functions as an incubator for new judicial technologies, giving courts a place to:
- Test tools in realistic environments (from courtrooms to small huddle rooms).
- Share insights with peers and industry partners like Logitech.
- Refine strategies to improve court operations and public access.
The goal is to help courts address real-world challenges—such as limited access to legal services and logistical barriers—by experimenting with practical, scalable technology solutions before rolling them out more broadly.
How is the Innovation Lab set up?
The Innovation Lab is organized into several distinct spaces, each designed to mirror common court and justice-system scenarios:
- Community Access Point: A private, tech-enabled room that supports secure remote access to justice. It can be configured with tools such as:
- Brio webcam
- Zone Wireless 2 headset
- MX Keys Combo for Business Gen 2
- Optional setups including Logi Dock Focus Room Kit, MK 120 Keyboard Combo, or Brio 305 webcam with H650e headset
- Huddle Rooms: Small collaboration spaces equipped with Rally Bar Huddle and Logitech Extend to support remote participation in meetings or hearings.
- Hoteling Spaces: Flexible workstations using Logi Dock to enable secure, productive work for staff who may not have a permanent desk.
- Advanced Conference Room: A hybrid meeting space featuring the Logitech Rally Bar, a dual-monitor setup, and a Scribe Whiteboard Camera to capture and share in-room content with remote participants.
- Courtroom: A modern courtroom environment with natural light and tools like Logitech Reach to share evidence and content clearly with all participants.
Together, these spaces allow courts to experiment with different configurations and workflows before investing in full-scale deployments.
Why does this technology investment matter for access to justice?
Access to justice is not evenly distributed. Legal deserts and logistical challenges affect millions of people every year, limiting their ability to participate fully in the legal system.
The Innovation Lab helps courts rethink how they deliver services by:
- Reducing geographic barriers through secure, remote participation spaces like the Community Access Point.
- Supporting hybrid hearings and meetings with tools such as Rally Bar, Scribe, and Logitech Reach so in-person and remote participants can engage on more equal footing.
- Improving operational efficiency with flexible hoteling spaces and modern conference rooms that support distributed teams.
By testing and refining these solutions in a controlled environment, the NCSC is helping courts reshape equity in the judicial system—making it easier for underserved communities to access information, attend hearings, and engage with the courts in a more convenient and fair way.
